Phillip “Chucky” Carroll is this weeks ORRA “Referee in the spotlight”.
Find out a little bit more about Chucky and his refereeing endeavours…
Why do you referee?
I wanted to stay involved in the game after leaving school. I realised I was probably too small to go anywhere playing in the front row and had never played anywhere else.
Fondest Refereeing Moment?
That’s a hard choice! It would probably be my first ever game, Kaikorai u11 V Taieri u11 Blue, on an awful April morning. Standing on a soggy Bishopscourt, I realised that I had made the right decision to referee. Either that, or when my name was announced as the winner of Junior Referee of the Year in 2015.
Jaco Peyper – he is a world class referee who has shown that those who lack vertical stature can still make it.
Dad’s roast duck
Most Admired Sportsperson?
Dylan Hartley – an abrasive hooker who’s not afraid to step up to the line.
Chucky continues to be a huge part of our association on and off the paddock. We thank him for his unrelenting commitment and wish him all the best in following in the large, or not so large, footsteps of Jaco.
