Eden Brown, 19, joined the association in 2014 whilst attending Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka. He then joined the Dunedin branch in 2015 when he decided to study Commerce at the University of Otago. In 2015 he earned his Dunedin Premier debut and was selected into the South Island U16 Tournament Squad, where he went on to referee the final. This year he has continued to ply his trade in the Premier 2 and Premier Colts grades, as well as earning his third match at Premier One. Find out some more about Eden below…
Why do you referee?
I referee because I love the occasion. Two teams pitting their skills, passion and tactics against each other for 80 minutes, and I am lucky enough to get the best seat in the house. Refereeing gives me mental and physical stimulation and continues to test my skills in high pressure environments. It has been a great way to grow as a person and develop life skills, as well as keeping me involved in footy. I intend to follow it as far as I can and have ambitions to push for higher honours.
Favourite Refereeing Moment?
Every Saturday I get to pick up the whistle, and hang out with my mates. Nothing better than seeing some great footy and having a beer and a yarn after the game.
My banter with Andrew Hore at Central 10’s earlier this year was a classic moment, or Assistant Refereeing at the Highlanders vs Waratahs match in Queenstown.
