Stuart Curran, 20, of Hawkes Bay, joined the association in 2014 after winning a competition at University Club’s Day to win a Pink Batts ITM Cup refereeing kit. Since then he says he has “never looked back” and after enjoying a monumental rise through the ranks, Curran is now a member of the Dunedin Premier Panel.
Why do you referee?
” I started refereeing to stay in touch with the game that I love, after getting injured as a player. It didn’t take much for me to become a better referee than I was a player! ”
Favourite Referee? Why?
” Ben O’Keeffe. Because he has the ability to juggle his professional life as a doctor while also excel and rise up the ranks in rugby. It is something I aspire to emulate. ”
Favourite Refereeing Memory
” My Premier Debut in 2015. It was a high scoring, fast paced match which was close until the end and kept me on my toes. It gave me taste of positive premier rugby and from then on I knew I wanted to be involved at that level. ”
” Dad’s Beef Schnitzel ”
We wish Stuart all the best with his future endeavors.
