Will takes another step in journey: SBHS vs OBHS
The journey I refer to is not to “Mordor” as you might expect by Mitchell Will’s modest stature, but one to refereeing success, as he enjoys a string of big appointments in the 2016 season. Will, recently selected in the New Zealand Wider Training Group, controlled the traditional fixture between the Boys High Schools of Otago and Southland on Wednesday. The game resulted in a 32-19 victory to the young men from Invercargill, the first time they have achieved such a feat since 2008.
Will set a high standard early and forced the school boys to play a brand of rugby that was competitive and entertaining in equal portions. He was assisted on the side lines by Eden Brown and Dave Owens, with ORRA Chairman Chris Hart once again utilising his experience as TMO.
Will was well commended for his performance and showed a high level of competence in dismissing a vocal Littlebourne crowd to facilitate an outstanding spectacle of rugby.
The game was broadcast by Sky Sport on Rugby Channel, as part of the Land Rover 1st XV Series. It was one of two games selected to be broadcast from Otago in 2016, with the previous being last weeks clash between Dunstan and Waitaki in Alexandra, refereed by Fraser Hannon.
SBHS 32 (Ben Paulin 2, Kaleb Talamahina, Curtis Williams tries; Jay Renton 3 con, 2 pen), OBHS 19 (Ricky Jackson 2, Sam Dickson tries; 2 con).
